Yonder Harland

by Martha Craig

If there's one thing I need, it's a new project. I love to sink my teeth into researching and procurement, and working on our own piece of land has been brilliant fun. I decided at the end of last year, when we finally got hot water connected, that our little space would make a great spot for a holiday stay.

When we set up the cabins it was very much with family in mind, but they grew up and suddenly we weren't using all the beautiful spaces.

Setting it up for visitors was a bit of a steep learning curve. Many hours were spent on watching Youtube videos of how to set up the perfect bed, trying to take adequate photos (still not there), and getting the outdoor spaces in order. We ended up painting all the buildings, making a new deck, and even mowing a tennis court (another work in progress).

We nervously made it available from early January and it rapidly was booked out every weekend. Somewhat panicked we shut off bookings in March so we could get a few more areas in order. It's now live on Airbnb (our own website is one of the projects that has been somewhat neglected).

It's an ongoing learning curve. We realised that letting people have their pets with them in winter isn't going to be viable, there's been a lot of muddy carpet to clean! But we do love having a reason to shoot over there and make everything pretty.
